What does an Azure consultant actually do?

An Azure consultant designs, builds and improves Microsoft Azure environments. In practice that covers four kinds of work. Planning decides which workloads move, in what order and at what cost. The foundation covers identity, networking, security policy and monitoring. Migration and modernization move applications and data. Operations keep costs and risks under control once everything is running.

The value of an outside consultant is pattern recognition. A team that migrates one estate every few years learns as it goes. A consultant who does this across many organizations already knows where projects stall, such as identity designed too late, networking that can't grow, or nobody owning the monthly bill, and designs around those problems from the first week.

How BC privacy law shapes your Azure design

Organizations in BC work under two provincial privacy laws. Public bodies such as health authorities, school districts, Crown corporations and municipalities fall under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA). Private organizations fall under BC's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), and federally regulated businesses under PIPEDA.

Amendments to FIPPA in 2021 removed the strict requirement to keep personal information in Canada. Public bodies still need a privacy impact assessment, with added requirements when sensitive personal information is stored outside Canada. In practice, most BC public sector organizations we work with keep personal information in Azure's Canadian regions, Canada Central in Toronto and Canada East in Quebec City. We enforce that with Azure Policy, so a misconfigured deployment can't quietly place data elsewhere.

Privacy reviews look beyond storage location. Access controls, encryption, logging and who can reach your data all come up, so we document those decisions as part of the design rather than reconstructing them for the review afterwards.

Signs you need an Azure partner rather than another hire

Hiring makes sense when Azure is steady, core work for your team. A partner makes sense when the work is specialized, time-bound or needs senior judgement you don't need full time. Common triggers we hear from BC organizations include:

• A migration is planned and nobody on the team has run one end to end
• The Azure bill has grown faster than usage and nobody can explain why

We keep the start deliberately small. The first stage is an assessment. We inventory workloads, review identity and security, and baseline your costs, and it ends with a written plan that ranks work by risk and value, with estimates you can take to leadership.

If you go ahead, the next stage is usually the foundation, meaning a new landing zone or targeted fixes to your existing one, followed by a first migration wave chosen to prove the approach on something low-risk. By the end of the first quarter most clients have a governed environment, their first workloads running on it and a clear view of monthly cost.
