Buyer's guide

Building on Microsoft Foundry

What the platform is, how to choose models, and what it takes to run AI in production with data kept in Canada.

What Microsoft Foundry is

Microsoft Foundry is Microsoft's platform for building AI applications and agents on Azure. It brings together a catalog of models from OpenAI and other providers, an agent service for building agents that use tools and your data, evaluation tools that measure quality and safety, and the governance controls enterprises need, all running in your own Azure subscription.

It was previously called Azure AI Studio and then Azure AI Foundry. The latest name reflects its role as the place to build AI across Microsoft's cloud, not just a set of Azure AI services.

Choosing a model

The model catalog is large, and defaulting to the most capable model for every task is an expensive habit. We choose by task. Reasoning-heavy work and complex agents justify a frontier model. Classification, extraction and routing usually run well on smaller, cheaper models.

Evaluations run on your own data settle the question with evidence rather than public benchmarks. We compare candidate models on the same test set for accuracy, latency and cost per request before committing.

From prototype to production

The difference between a demo and a service is everything around the model:

  • Separate projects for development and production
  • Private networking and managed identities instead of stored keys
  • Evaluations against a fixed test set before every release
  • Content safety filters tuned to your use case
  • Monitoring of quality, latency, token usage and cost
  • A rollback plan for model and prompt changes

We set these up as part of the build, so moving from pilot to production is a release rather than a rebuild.

Keeping AI data in Canada

Many models in Foundry can be deployed in Azure's Canadian regions, but availability differs by model and deployment type and changes as Microsoft adds capacity. Some deployment types route requests across regions to find capacity, which matters if you have residency obligations.

For BC workloads with data residency requirements under FIPPA or contractual commitments, we choose models and deployment types that keep processing in Canada, and document any exceptions for your privacy review.

Why it matters

Benefits of building on Microsoft Foundry

Accelerate innovation with governed AI, safe deployments, and scalable agents built on Microsoft's trusted platform.

  • 01

    Governed Platform

Get rid of experiment sprawl. Microsoft Foundry is your one place to select models, build prompts and flows, evaluate, and ship with access controls and quotas from the Management Center.

  • 02

    Built-In Guardrails

No more model risk and compliance gaps. Content Safety filters and Risks & Safety dashboards reduce unsafe output and give auditors evidence.

  • 03

    Measurable Acceleration

Prompt flow and evaluation flows streamline iteration and quantify quality before go-live, reducing slow prototyping.

  • 04

    Production Agents

AI Agent Service orchestrates tools, calls, identity, and observability for agents you can scale and support.

FAQ

Microsoft Foundry, answered

Is Microsoft Foundry the same as Azure AI Foundry?

Yes. Microsoft renamed Azure AI Studio to Azure AI Foundry at Ignite 2024, then renamed Azure AI Foundry to Microsoft Foundry at Ignite 2025. The platform for building AI apps and agents on Azure continued under the new name, so existing projects don't need to be rebuilt because of the rename.

What can we build with Microsoft Foundry?

AI agents and applications that use models from OpenAI and other providers, connect to your data and tools, and run inside your Azure subscription. Typical examples are customer service agents, document processing, internal knowledge assistants and multi-step workflows that call your own systems.

Microsoft Foundry or Copilot Studio?

Choose Microsoft Foundry for code-first work, custom models, customer-facing apps and complex workflows. Choose Copilot Studio for low-code agents that serve your own staff inside Microsoft 365. We often use both in the same organization.

How do you make Foundry projects production-ready?

We set up governance first, meaning access, quotas and network isolation. Then we evaluate quality and safety before launch, give each agent its own identity with least-privilege access, and monitor accuracy, token usage and cost once it's live.

Do you work with organizations outside Vancouver?

Yes. We're based in Metro Vancouver and run Foundry projects for organizations across Canada and the US, with in-person workshops available locally.

Do we need Azure to use Microsoft Foundry?

Yes. Microsoft Foundry runs in an Azure subscription, which is what gives you control over networking, identity, data location and cost. If you don't have Azure yet, we set up a governed environment for it as part of the project.

Can Foundry agents work with Microsoft 365 and Copilot Studio?

Yes. Agents built in Foundry can be connected to Microsoft 365 experiences, and Copilot Studio can hand tasks to Foundry agents, so staff can use a low-code agent in Teams that calls a code-first agent for the complex work.
